Benjani Mwaruwari signed for Portsmouth from French side Auxerre in January 2005. Despite finding life in France hard before the move, he scored 19 goals in 72 league games for Auxerre and was a hero in their 2005 French Cup triumph, scoring in the 2-1 defeat of Sedan in the final.

He played sixteen times in his first few months at Portsmouth and scored once - the first in a 2-1 victory at Wigan. His scoring ratio continued to be hit and miss over the course of the 2006/07 season, and he ended up with just six goals.

However in 2007/08, he found his shooting boots, scoring 12 goals by the end of the January transfer window, earning himself a move to Manchester City. There was initally some confusion over his deal, which didn't go through until February 5th, but after that he was free to start life at Eastlands.
